Sneaky Causes of Spindle Failures
- Cooling System Blockage: Spindle motors are usually water or oil-cooled. Chiller failures or lime/scale blockage in cooling channels cause the motor to overheat and the stator insulation to scorch.
- Bearing Wear and Unbalance: Heavy loads, dull cutting tools, or machine crashes damage ceramic spindle bearings. A damaged bearing produces both heat and severe vibration at high speeds.
- Drawbar Spring Breakage: The disc springs in the tool-holding mechanism break or fatigue over time, causing the tool to spin unbalanced, damaging motor mechanics.
